About

9 Days – On Safari With Children

These safaris are for families with children aged 5 to teenagers. To share a big adventure together and see the exciting wildlife in beautiful African settings has all the ingredients of a unique family holiday. Our family safari is tailor-made, to suit all ages.  A question we are sometimes asked is “Is it safe?” and the answer is “Yes, as safe as other family holiday destinations”.  Another related question is “How old should children be to go on a family safari?”  The answer depends upon the maturity of the child.  They need to be able to sit quietly in an open vehicle, to behave when sharing a small camp with other adults and certainly not wander off on their own, and to obey instructions from your guide if you go into the bush on foot or in a boat.  They will then be rewarded with an experience which will be far better than you could imagine from “Big Cat Diary” because it will be real and you will be completely immersed in Africa.

DAY 2 – RHINO & LION PARK OR LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE

We have designed two exciting excursions for your children, depending on their ages:

RHINO & LION PARK - For children from 5 up to 11 years

The Rhino Lion Nature Reserve is situated in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. The reserve has a variety of wildlife, such as white Lion, Tigers, Cheetah and Wild Dog. There are 20 different herbivore species including white Rhino, Gemsbok, Springbok and many others. Children are allowed to hug lion cubs under supervision.

LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE - For children from 12 up to 16 years

We invite you to experience the spirit of Ubuntu at this Unique Cultural Venue where the people of Lesedi welcome you with music, song and the warmth of Africa. One of Lesedi’s many differentiating factors is the village’s natural and tasteful incorporation into the surrounding bush, river and forests, with five traditional homesteads including Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele. Local families live permanently in each of these five homesteads and visitors are invited to observe the African way of life by enjoying a short tour of the villages. This is a destination not to be missed

DAY 03 - 04 – ENTABENI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

Your rental car will be delivered at Villa Schreiner on 10.00 hrs.
Less than a three-hour drive north of Johannesburg lies Entabeni Safari Conservancy, “The Place of the Mountain”, and is situated in the World Heritage “Waterberg Biosphere” of the Waterberg region. This 22 000 ha malaria-free reserve boasts five eco-systems. The upper escarpment offers majestic craggy rock formations and wide open grass plains. This is separated from the lower plateau by 600 meter high cliffs. The lower escarpment is about three degrees warmer and comprises sandy wetlands. Children are welcome and will be permitted on game drives as from 6 years of age. Where possible, depending on the number of children in-house and the availability of additional vehicles, special game drives for the children can be arranged.

2 nights stay in Entabeni Safari Lodge (full board, including 2 x gamedrives per day)

DAY 5 – JOHANNESBURG - VILLA SCHREINER GUEST HOUSE

After an early morning game drive you will drive back to Villa Schreiner. In the early evening we organize a ‘Family Braai’ (BBQ). Your children will enjoy this and can even stay and play at the poolside in our tropical landscaped garden.

DAY 6 – JOHANNESBURG – CAPE TOWN – COMMODORE HOTEL

You will deliver your rental car at Lanseria airport prior to your direct flight to Cape Town. At Cape Town airport your rental car is available upon arrival. You will drive to the Commodore Hotel – with views of Table Mountain – and is situated at walking distance in the heart of the famous Alfred & Waterfront in Cape Town.

3 nights stay in the Commodore Hotel (bed & breakfast)

DAY 7 – VICTORIA & ALFRED WATERFRONT

The V&A Waterfront is a treasure trove of fun and exciting experiences, to be discovered...new journeys await around every corner, be it Magic Puppet Shows or activity workshops with Alfie, clowns and buskers keeping you in stitches ..sure to have even mom & dad joining in! If you've had your fill on being the little fashionista, there's toys galore, movies and loads of computer games to be discovered - not forgetting the opportunity of playing between the gems at the
Scratch Patch and challenging Mom or Dad, to a round of Cave Golf...definitely fun for the entire family. If you loved "Finding Nemo", the Two Oceans Aquarium is just the place to spend hours on end...learn so much about our aquatic friends and the way they live, within their underwater world, including the new "Frog Exhibit".  You could even see how some really brave folks “swim” with the sharks.
(NB: Kiddies Strollers/Prams can be hired, including Kiddies Tags, which should allow Waterfront Security contacting you, in the event of your child being lost and then found by a member of staff or the public)

We have designed two exciting excursions for your children, depending on their ages:

TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM - For children from 5 up to 11 years

A series of some thirty-two exhibits comprises the Oceans of Contrast - Atlantic Ocean Gallery which introduces some of the animals from beneath the waves of the cold Atlantic. Our volunteers at the
Touch Pool and Microscope will provide you with fascinating snippets of ocean information whilst you experience close encounters with some weird and wonderful ocean creatures. The Afrisam Children's Centre allows children (and those who are young at heart!) to express their experiences of the Aquarium through drawing, painting and clay modeling. Daily puppet shows are a treat for everyone as Peter the Penguin invites you to participate in song and dance.

ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM - For children from 12 up to 16 years

During apartheid many black people were kept on Robben Island as political prisoners. Former President Nelson Mandela was kept there. The prison was known all over the world for its harsh conditions and when the political prisoners of the apartheid government were released Robben Island became a symbol of the strength of the human spirit. Visitors can expect an enriching experience. There’s plenty to see on the island: from the maximum security prison which held political prisoners from the 1960s, to the memorabilia of prisoners incarcerated there, to the quarry mines where prisoners were forced to dig, to the church, to the many buildings dating back to the Second World War. There’s a small village where the island’s main center is located.

DAY 9 – CAPE TOWN

Your last day in South Africa to buy some souvenirs before you deliver your car rental at Cape Town Airport prior to your flight back home. The end of an unforgettable experience!
